What exactly is this ingredient, resveratrol?

Resveratrol is a naturally occurring antioxidant which can be found in the skin of grapes, peanuts, all berries, and even dark chocolate. It is available in powder, pill or liquid form and even in a variety of skincare products, such as serums, creams, moisturisers, and supplements. Resveratrol is also part of a group of compounds known as polyphenols. These polyphenols act as key antioxidants, which serve on the front line as the ‘generals’ gathering the troops in order to protect the cells against damage that leads to cellular aging.

Generally, most of the OTC forms of resveratrol are fully stable, but it is still recommended to use products that are packaged in airtight containers, just like a pump, and storing the products in a cool and dark place.

Benefits of resveratrol for the skin

1. It protects the skin

Resveratrol is capable of interrupting the negative environmental influences as well as protect the skin from UV damage. The skin is the largest organ in the body and it acts as your body’s first line of defence against the harmful microorganisms. This antioxidant in turn helps boost your skin’s natural barriers.

2. Slows aging

Resveratrol for skin happens to work on a cellular level to fight the process of aging by stimulating healthy cell proliferation. Resveratrol forms complex molecules with certain metal ions, inactivating their ability to form free radicals, and therefore causing an improvement in cellular function and supporting fibroblasts, along with creating healthy collagen. This combination make resveratrol very effective in reducing the damaging effect of the free radicals on the skin.
